Advanced Fuel Research, Inc. (AFR) celebrated its fourty-second anniversary in early 2022, currently has 6 full-time employees, 2 part-time employees, and 10,000 sq. ft. of office and laboratory space.

Our company has developed leading edge technologies in a number of areas including:

  • Combustion monitoring and control, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and other optical methods.
  • Pyrolysis processing of waste materials (biomass, paper, plastic, rubber) to produce high value products, including biochar.
  • Fuel processing and gas storage components for fuel cells.
  • Advanced thin film materials for electronic devices and semiconductors
  • Consulting services on fuel (biomass, waste, coal) characterization and utilization, biofuels and biochar.

Through government and industrial support, AFR has successfully developed a number of innovative laboratory and process control instruments and software products that are today serving industrial and academic clients throughout the world. AFR also performs Contract Research and Development for research institutes and private organizations.

AFR often works on projects in collaboration with other small businesses, large companies, national laboratories, universities, and consultants. Many of these interactions have occurred through Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) projects.

AFR has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences. Examples include meetings of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Materials Research Society (MRS), American Carbon Society, The International Society of Optical Engineers (SPIE), International Symposium on Combustion, International Conference on Environmental Systems, Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry, American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Air and Waste Management Association. In addition, AFR scientists have been actively involved in organizing symposia, in the governance of professional societies, and in standards organizations.
